Saxony owns 50,000 bitcoins!

In an investigation by the Dresden Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Saxony State Criminal Police Office, and the Tax Investigation Department of the Leipzig II Tax Office, nearly 50,000 bitcoins were temporarily secured in mid-January 2024. The investigation was supported by the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), the FBI, and a Munich-based forensic IT expert firm.

This is the largest seizure of bitcoins by law enforcement authorities in the Federal Republic of Germany to date. The bitcoins were seized after being voluntarily transferred by a suspect to wallets provided by the BKA. However, a final decision on the use of the bitcoins has not yet been made.

The ongoing investigation is targeting two individuals (male, 40 years old, German; male, 37 years old, Polish) in connection with the suspicion of commercial illegal exploitation of copyrighted works under the Copyright Act and subsequent commercial money laundering. These individuals are believed to have acquired bitcoins with the proceeds from a German piracy portal that operated until the end of May 2013.

Background information on the Saxony Investigation Unit (INES) The Integrated Investigation Unit Saxony (INES) was founded in 2004 to combat structural and serious cases of situational corruption. Since 2009, INES has also been responsible for the investigation of high-profile and particularly significant cases of serious or organized crime.

INES integrates various investigators into one unit. In addition to prosecutors, there is a financial expert for evaluating financial and banking matters, as well as seconded employees from the tax investigation department of the Leipzig II Tax Office. The Saxony State Criminal Police Office, Department 25, is an essential part of INES.
