Mobile Payment is gaining momentum!

Last Updated: 6. November 2023By

Although the importance of cashless payments such as debit and credit cards as well as Google Pay, PayPal or Apple Pay has increased, cash is still primarily used in Germany in 2023. This is shown by an evaluation of the Statista Consumer Insights. Nevertheless, an alternative form of payment seems to be gaining momentum especially outside of e-commerce: Mobile Payment!

Germany is still a cash country: 11% of those surveyed used their smartphone for payments in 2021, and two years later it was around 18%. No other payment method has gained popularity to this extent. With about 73%, cash is still the most popular method to settle bills on site in restaurants, in retail and at other offline points of sale. However, money is no longer as important as it was a few years ago: in 2020, the proportion of those who paid with notes and coins was still 84%.

While other countries in Europe analysed within the Statista Consumer Insights show similar values โ€‹โ€‹in terms of the use of mobile payment, this form of payment has become almost the gold standard in parts of the world. For example, in China 68% of those surveyed pay with their mobile phone or smartwatch and only 46% in cash, while in India 62% use mobile devices and 64% cash.

My conclusion: The bank and the ATM of the future will also be an app on your smartphone or smartwatch in Germany!
