For many retailers, the Christmas season is of special importance. This is when the industry generates by far the highest sales in the final quarter of each year.

This also applies to the Hamburg-based fashion jewelry retailer Bijou Brigitte. The company announced on Tuesday that the positive sales trend continued in the fourth quarter of the past fiscal year.

Before I go into the current preliminary sales figures of the Hamburg-based company, I would like to introduce the jewelry retailer to you.

Bijou Brigitte in brief The company Bijou Brigitte, founded in Hamburg in 1963, is according to its own statements the European market leader in the field of fashion jewelry and trendy accessories. The company name is derived from Brigitte Werner, wife of the company founder. The word Bijou comes from French and means something like gem or treasure.

As of the end of 2023/24, the company had a network of 897 branches in Germany and abroad. In addition to its retail network, the company also sells its jewelry products online. Bijou Brigitte currently employs around 2,300 people. The range of the Hamburg fashion retailer includes more than 10,000 items.

The target group consists mainly of female customers. In addition to the parent company in Hamburg, the jewelry company has numerous subsidiaries in Europe and China. Since 1988, the company’s shares have been traded on the stock exchange. Bijou Brigitte is still majority-owned by the family.

Sales increase – number of branches decreases According to preliminary calculations, Bijou Brigitte was able to continue its positive sales trend since the corona pandemic in the past year. The jewelry retailer achieved a turnover of 327.6 million euros in the 2023 financial year.

This corresponds to an increase in turnover of 21.1 million euros or an increase of 6.9% compared to the previous year. This puts the preliminary sales within the forecast range of 320 to 340 million euros. With this annual turnover, the company is now only 1.9% below the turnover of the pre-corona year, despite a reduced branch network of 145 locations.

According to the company, fewer new store locations were found in 2023 that met the high location requirements. In other words, the branch network was further reduced. As of the end of 2023/24, Bijou Brigitte had only 897 branches. A year earlier, there were still 902 branches.

The Bijou Brigitte share has hardly moved in the past twelve months. Between March and April 2023, it had risen more sharply, but then gave back its gains. The company is cheaply valued and offers a comparatively high dividend yield. However, Bijou Brigitte is anything but a growth stock.
