Bloxberg: Science on the Blockchain!

Last year, the members of the bloxberg Association for the Advancement of Science and Blockchain e.V. met for the sixth time in Belgrade. During this meeting, the Max Planck Society (MPG) was appointed as the chairman of the association. Discussions also focused on expanding the world’s largest proof-of-authority network, which is exclusively operated by scientific institutions.

The bloxberg technology was developed under the leadership of the Munich-based Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) and launched in 2019 with ten other international universities. Today, bloxberg is one of the pioneering examples of blockchain technology and a leader in creating a decentralized global infrastructure in the field of science.

The first day of the conference took place at the Faculty of Organizational Sciences of the University of Belgrade, with no public access. It served as a review of a successful first year, after the consortium organized itself as an association with nearly 50 members in 2022. In 2022 alone, over 30 connections and applications were recorded. In total, over 18,000 research objects (NFTs) have been certified through the blockchain so far.

The Max Planck Society has taken over the chairmanship of the bloxberg Association. Another key agenda item was the election of the chairman, which was previously held by the University of Nicosia in 2022 and has now been passed on to the Max Planck Society. Together, the partners aim to push the boundaries of blockchain technology and its applications to shape the future of the scientific world. With the support of their international community, they hope to unlock new possibilities and promote interdisciplinary research to achieve global impact.

The bloxberg network aims to make a significant contribution to collaborative research across borders and become a flagship project for the future of connected science based on blockchain technology.

Ensuring the quality and security of data and knowledge is essential for a sustainable society, and is a central task that universities and research institutions worldwide have always been committed to.

However, the application fields of bloxberg are far from being fully explored, and there is a high demand for a transparent and secure online system based on blockchain technology in the field of science. This includes proving the authenticity of data, protecting intellectual property rights, exchanging valuable research results, peer reviewing, and publishing publications.
